1. By the dawn,
2
2. And [by] ten nights,
3
3. And [by] the even and the odd,
4
4. And [by] the night when it passes,
5
5. Is there not in [all] that an oath for one of intellect?
6
6. Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿĀd—
7
7. [With] Iram—of the lofty pillars—
8
8. The like of which had never been created in the lands—
9
9. And Thamūd, who carved the rocks in the valley,
10
10. And Pharaoh, owner of the stakes—
11
11. Who transgressed throughout the lands,
12
12. And multiplied therein corruption.
13
13. So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
14
14. Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
15
15. As for man, when his Lord tries him and thus is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.”
16
16. But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.”
17
17. No! But you do not honor the orphan,
18
18. And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor,
19
19. And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
20
20. And you love wealth with immense love.
21
21. No! When the earth has been leveled, pounded and crushed,
22
22. And your Lord will come and the angels, rank upon rank,
23
23. And Hell, on that Day, will be brought forth—on that Day man will remember, but how will remembrance avail him?
24
24. He will say, “Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life.”
25
25. So on that Day no one will punish as He punishes,
26
26. And no one will bind [as severely] as He binds.
27
27. [To the righteous it will be said], “O tranquil soul,
28
28. Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
29
29. And enter among My servants,
30
30. And enter My Paradise.”
